Probiotics with evidences for guarantee the balance of the vaginal microbiota have been studied for more specific applications in the field of female fertility. Through an in vitro model of myometrium, the following parameters were analyzed:

  • Cytotoxicity and ROS production
  • Analysis of the cell cycle and cell proliferation
  • Stimulation of ovarian cells metabolism and functionalities
  • Quantification of oxytocin
  • Analysis of contractile activity
  • Analysis of FSH and LH production
  • Analysis of biomarkers involved in apoptotic processes
  • Analysis of the main markers involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS (FGD4, CDC42 and PAK1)

Results

Only the combination of Bifidobacterium bifidum novaBBF9 (DSM 34337), Lactobacillus crispatus novaLCR6 (DSM 34348) and Lactobacillus fermentum novaLF58 (DSM 34340) showed an amplified positive effect (p<0.05) on intestinal and ovarian metabolism compared to single strains. Remarkably, the combo of such probiotics resulted able to significantly (p<0.05 vs control) promote the mitochondrial metabolism of ovarian cells.
